Marguerite Couillard
Baptism
Marguerite Couillard was baptized on August 10, 1626, in Quebec by Jesuit father Charles Lalemant. She was the daughter of Guillaume Couillard and Guillemette Hébert.

First Marriage
On October 7, 1637, in Quebec, Jean Nicollet married Marguerite Couillard, daughter of Guillaume Couillard and Guillemette Hébert [2].
- They signed a marriage contract before Jean Guitet on October 22, 1637 (original lost) [3, 4].
Children from First Marriage
Two known children (see their profiles):
- Ignace Nicolet: Died at birth in December 1640 in Trois-Rivières (exact day unknown)
- Marguerite Nicolet: Baptized on April 1, 1642, in Trois-Rivières, born recently. She would later marry Jean Baptiste Legardeur on July 4, 1656, in Quebec.
Marguerite was godmother to various Indigenous people in Trois-Rivières starting in 1640. She was also godmother to François Crevier, Michel de la Poterie, and François Hartel. From October 1642 onward, she was in Quebec, where she became godmother to Marguerite Bourdon, Louyse Morin, and Noël Racine in 1643 [5].
Jean Nicollet drowned when his boat capsized near Sillery. His body and those of the men who drowned with him were never recovered. A funeral service was held for them in Quebec on October 29, 1642 [6]:
“On the 29th, the funerals of Mr. Nicolet and three men of Mr. de Chavigni, who drowned in a boat going from Kébec to Sylleri, were held. The bodies were not found. The names of the said three men are Jehan Febve, Noël Girardeau, and __ (name missing).”
Her brother-in-law Pierre Nicolet was present during the inventory made after Jean’s death on November 12, 1642 [7].
Second Marriage
On October 12, 1646, a marriage contract was drawn up before Guillaume Tronquet between Marguerite Couillard, widow of Jean Nicolet, and Nicolas Maquart, son of the late Thomas Maquart, who had been a water carrier, and Marguerite Hardy, from Mareuil-sur-Ay in Champagne [8].

The couple signed with the witnesses and others, Nicolas Maquart (with flourish), Marguerite Couillard.
On November 16, 1646, in Quebec, Father Barthélemy Vimont of the Society of Jesus celebrated the marriage between Nicolas Macart and Marguerite Couillart, in the presence of Charles Huault de Montmagny, Nicolas Marsolet, and Pierre de Launay [9].

- Marie Macart: Baptized September 11, 1647 (born recently) in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [10]; married Charles Pierre Legardeur de Villiers on January 18, 1663, in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [11].
- Geneviève Macart: Born October 4, 1649, baptized October 5 in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [12]; married Charles Basire on January 11, 1666, in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [13].
- Anne Macart: Born March 18, 1652, provisionally baptized on the 19th, formal baptism completed on the 30th in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [14]; married Pierre Bécard de Granville on October 22, 1668, in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [15].
- Ignace Macar: Baptized January 7, 1654, in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [16].
- Catherine Gertrude Macar: Born November 15, 1655, baptized on the 17th in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [17]; married Jean Baptiste François Deschamps de la Bouteillerie on October 26, 1672, in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [18].
- Charles Macar: Born December 15, 1656, baptized on the 16th in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [19]; married Renée Jeanne Gourdeaux on December 20, 1686, in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [20].
Nicolas Maquart died at his home and was buried the same day, October 5, 1659, in Quebec. He was interred in the Notre-Dame church near his pew [21].
- Godmother roles: In 1657, Marguerite was godmother to her niece Marie Bissot; in 1658, to her nephew Jean François Guyon; and in 1660, to Noël Leblanc, son of Madeleine Nicolet. In 1666, she became godmother to her grandson Charles Basyre, son of Geneviève Macart [5:1].

In 1679, Marguerite was godmother to her granddaughter Françoise Béquart, daughter of Anne Macart [5:2]. In 1687, Marguerite was godmother to her grandson Charles François Maccar, son of Charles [5:3].
Death
Marguerite Couillard, widow Macard, was buried on April 20, 1705, in Quebec (Notre-Dame) [24].
- The record states she was about 85 years old.
- Present were: Jean Brassard, father and son, and a large gathering of people, with parish priest François Dupré officiating.
